A residential building originally constructed in the 1950s for employees of the Finnish State Railways has undergone a comprehensive renovation from the basement to the attic in the heart of Turku.

Originally built in 1950 for employees of the Finnish State Railways on Ratapihankatu in Turku, the building has been renewed to meet the needs of modern living while respecting its historical character.

More energy-efficient and comfortable living through renovation

At Lumo Homes, the goal of renovations is both to improve the building’s energy efficiency and increase the comfort of living. At Ratapihankatu 43, Turku every part of the building has been renewed from the basement to the attic.

The most visible part of the renovation for passers-by is the insulating plaster applied to the entrance-side facade. In addition to giving the building a brighter appearance, the new facade improves the thermal insulation of the exterior wall. The building was also equipped with centralised mechanical exhaust ventilation with heat recovery.

The apartments underwent more extensive changes. During the renovation, the original 24 apartments were transformed into 32 modern Lumo homes. New storage solutions were added to better meet today’s living needs, the interior surfaces of the apartments were completely renewed, and energy efficiency was improved with new energy-efficient household appliances, plumbing fixtures and LED lighting.

Apartment-specific water meters were also installed, enabling residents to monitor their water consumption and, in addition to supporting energy-efficient living, influence their housing costs.

The building’s wide window sills continue to reflect its rich history, while the new materials and household appliances bring the comfort of modern living.

As part of the renovation, the building’s safety was also brought up to date. Every apartment is equipped with fire alarms connected to the mains, and the locking systems have been renewed.

The shared facilities on the basement level have all been renewed, including the sauna, residents’ free laundry room, drying room and club room. The basement also continues to provide extensive storage facilities for personal belongings, bicycles, prams and outdoor equipment.

As part of the project, four standard charging stations for electric vehicles were added to the building’s parking spaces at the request of the residents, allowing them to charge their vehicles with carbon-neutral electricity.

Ratapihankatu has something for everyone

The apartments in this compact building have attracted a wide range of residents, all of whom appreciate urban living with excellent transport connections and nearby services. The atmosphere of the historic stone building, combined with its fully renovated apartments, has also proven highly attractive to residents.

“All of the two-bedroom apartments have been rented for quite some time already. They appeal to couples, families and people looking for shared accommodation,” says Laura Koiranen, Sales Director at Lumo Homes.

The smaller apartments at Ratapihankatu are well suited for single residents, couples and, thanks to their practical layouts, also smaller families. Pets are also warmly welcome, as long as everyday life in a building without an elevator runs smoothly.

“Our future residents are excited about the completion of the renovation. One of them has even been living in the neighbouring Lumo building while waiting to move back into their renewed old home,” Koiranen says.

The green inner courtyard offers a peaceful retreat in the middle of the city. Turku railway station is right next door, while the riverside, restaurants, cultural attractions and services in the city centre are all within walking distance. The city’s Föli buses provide convenient connections throughout Turku.

The renovation of Ratapihankatu 43 will be completed and residents will be able to move into their new homes on 1 July 2026. The apartments that are still available can be rented through the Lumo webstore: https://lumo.fi/en/rental-apartments/Turku/Keskusta/Ratapihankatu-43
